1. The human rights project run by the UNDP has provided important
and effective support for the National Human Rights Commission
(NHRC),which was established in 2001. The NHRC produces an annual
report on the Mongolian human rights situation. The report was
debated in the parliament for the first time this May. While the
NHRC investigates a variety of human rights problems, it has
consistently highlighted the problems of poor prison conditions and
police abuse of detainees. The NHRC has provided some training to
police, judges, procurators, and lawyers, but UNDP is not known to
have done such training itself.
2. The UNDP human rights project ended in May, but the UNDP is
considering the contents and desirability of a follow-on project
which would start this fall.
