1. (C/NF) On June 1, Ambassador delivered reftel demarche on
the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Ministerial statement on Iran
to MFA Secretary of State Hatem Ben Salem. Ben Salem, who
represented Tunisia at the Ministerial, agreed that the final
statement was unhelpful. He stressed that Tunisia, along
with Singapore, had worked behind the scenes against the
statement, but that Iran had "a huge amount" of support in
NAM. He explained that "clever" Iranian diplomats had
introduced the statement at the last minute and successfully
pushed it through quickly.
2. (C/NF) Ben Salem also remarked that the public reception
of the Iranian delegation was "incredible." He added that
China was playing a "double game" and supported Iran's
efforts during the Ministerial.
