(C) Embassy Tokyo Political Officer conveyed reftel demarche
on June 12 to MOFA UN Policy Division Deputy Director Aya
Yoshida. On June 13, Hirotaka Ishikawa of the same division
responded that the government of Japan agrees with the United
States on the important role of Multinational Force in Iraq,
as well as those of the Development Fund for Iraq (DFI) and
the International Advisory and Monitoring Board (IAMB).
Japan intends to express strong support for these bodies at
the June 15 consultation meeting, as well as strong support
for the new Iraqi government. Separately, Ishikawa noted
that MOFA had received a copy of the draft UNSC press
statement. He believed that Japan would be able to support
the draft and explained that it would convey any comments
through its UN mission in New York.
