1. The following is an update on avian influenza (AI)
developments in Japan for the period June 1-8. No human or
animal outbreaks of H5N1 avian influenza were reported in
Japan during the above period.

Ibaraki Issue Safety Declaration
--------------

2. On June 1, Masaru Hashimoto, Governor of Ibaraki
Prefecture, announced his intention to issue a declaration
of safety on the outbreaks of avian influenza in the
prefecture after the prefecture confirms that all affected
poultry farms are negative for the virus. To do this, the
prefecture has to sterilize the farms three times after
culling chickens and then needs to confirm that no virus is
detected in the farms. As of June 1, 12 farms out of 40
affected in the prefecture have yet to be examined. The
prefecture expects that the confirmation will be done by
the end of June at the earliest.
