SUBJECT: MEDIA REACTION BIN LADEN AND ZARQAWI TAPES -
TOKYO
LEAD STORIES: Top stories on Monday morning included a US-
Japan plan to transfer US Army 1st Corps headquarters to
Camp Zama during US fiscal 2008 and move the Air Self-
Defense command headquarters to Yokota Air Base in
Japanese fiscal 2010.
"Statements by al-Qaeda Leaders Intended to Expand
Front? A report from Cairo in the liberal Tokyo Shimbun
stated (5/1): "Recently, each of the three top leaders of
al-Qaeda -- bin Laden, Zarqawi, and Zawahiri -- issued
taped statements. They appear to be trying to assert
their continued leadership over the terrorist group by
stressing the 'failure' of the US military.... Each of
the three statements had a different thrust. Bin Laden
criticized US and European pressure on Hamas in order to
win greater Muslim support for al-Qaeda and suggested an
expansion of the front by citing Sudan. Zawahiri called
for the overthrow of the current pro-US Pakistani
government and clarified his position opposing Iraqi
Prime Minister-designate Maliki. Meanwhile, Zarqawi's
video portrayed him as a warrior. Zawahiri is said to
have criticized Zarqawi's approach of killing Muslims in
Iraq. However, in his recent statement, Zawahiri praised
Zarqawi's achievements. The recent messages may suggest a
reconciliation between the two masterminds."
