LEAD STORIES: Most Wednesday morning papers front-paged
the announcement by Iran's Expediency Council Chairman
Rafsanjani Tuesday that his nation commenced uranium
enrichment at a nuclear facility in central Iran by using
a "centrifuge cascade."
1. There were no immediate editorials or commentaries
concerning Iran's announcement.
2. "IAEA Likely to Convene Emergency Meeting" Vienna
correspondent Sakuraniwa of the business-oriented Nihon
Keizai commented (4/12): "Following Iran's announcement
of its successful production of low-level enriched
uranium, it is unavoidable that Tehran's relations with
the international community will become strained.
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director
General ElBaradei plans to visit Iran as early as Tuesday
to urge Tehran to suspend activities relating to uranium
enrichment. ElBaradei is also expected to again call on
Tehran to expand cooperation regarding IAEA inspections
of its nuclear facilities. There is already a strong
likelihood that the US and other Western countries will
ask the IAEA to convene an emergency board meeting to
deal with the situation. Following Iran's announcement,
the USG expressed concern that the situation was taking a
turn for the worse. ElBaradei's visit, his first in two
years, had already been planned, as he has been
attempting to mediate between Iran and the international
community."
