1. "Death of Milosevic, 'Butcher of the Balkans'" The
liberal Asahi editorialized (3/14): "Former Yugoslav
President Milosevic, known as the 'butcher of the
Balkans,' has died in the middle of his four year trial
at the International Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia
in The Hague on charges of directing organized massacres
during the civil war in Bosnia-Herzegovina and the
conflict in Kosovo, which resulted in a combined 200,000
deaths. Although it has been announced that he died of a
heart attack, speculation is rife in some parts of Europe
that he was poisoned. We hope authorities will thoroughly
examine the cause of death and dispel any lingering
doubts.... It was the conflicts in the former Yugoslavia
that erupted in the early 1990s that demonstrated that
the post-Cold War world was rife with conflict and had
not necessarily become peaceful.... Milosevic, defending
himself without the aid of counsel, criticized the
tribunal as a 'lynching' and called on the court to
summon former President Clinton as a witness. With his
death, many questions will remain unanswered....
Following Milosevic's death, it has become imperative to
track down and arrest Bosnian Serb leader Karadzic and
military commander Mladic in order to shed light on these
crimes in their totality. Authorities where these two
suspects are believed to be hiding should hand them
over."
