LEAD STORIES: Monday morning's Yomiuri front-paged a
report claiming that the Bank of Japan will likely end
its policy of quantitative easing in March or April, as
the GOJ has informally decided that it would not oppose
such a move by the central bank.
1. "Iraq's Sectarian Confrontation: Turning the Crisis
into National Reconciliation" The conservative Sankei
editorialized (2/27): "The sectarian strife between
Shiite and Sunni radicals that was triggered by the
bombing of the Shiite Askariya Golden Mosque in Samarra
has led to a state of emergency that has claimed the
lives of more than 200 people and resulted in a daytime
curfew. Some have suggested that civil war is a
possibility if things continue along the present course.
We urge the Iraqi people to transform this crisis into an
opportunity for national reconciliation and to not play
into the hands of the terrorists.
2. "... The bombing was most likely carried out by al-
Qaeda in Iraq, the organization led by al-Zarqawi. This
terrorist group is the one most opposed to stability and
democracy in Iraq. Its past statements show that this
group is trying to sow chaos in Iraq, drive the US
military into a corner, and make the country a stronghold
of international terrorism.... The Iraqi people
successfully voted three times last year, with turnout
for December's national assembly election at 78 percent.
Iraqis should be confident of establishing a democratic
country. Now that the country is facing a crisis that
could develop into civil war, the political parties and
religious leaders should be reminded of the importance of
cooperation and resume talks aimed at forming a coalition
government."
