ELECTION

REF: STATE 137429

(SBU) Poloff delivered reftel demarche August 23 to Peter van
der Vliet, head of Political and Legal Affairs, MFA UN and
IFIs Department. Van der Vliet said that the Dutch were
waiting to see how their own HRC re-election campaign shaped
out, before deciding whether to support Matheson. The Dutch
are looking to trade votes in ILC, HRC and other elections
and would be interested in cutting deals with us. Van der
Vliet added that, whatever the final decision, the GONL would
not support any candidates who were "not qualified."
