1. (C) Acting Dutch MFA Political Director Wim Geerts told
POLCOUNS August 12, in response to ref a points, that the
Dutch welcomed UNSCR 1701 and would actively seek
opportunities to demonstrate this support publicly. This is
consistent with comments Foreign Minister Bot made to
Ambassador Arnall on August 10 (ref b.) Geerts said the MFA
had prepared points for the Foreign Minister to use with the
press and parliament along the following lines:
- The Dutch welcome the resolution and believe it forms a
good basis for reaching stability and security for Lebanon
and Israel;
- It is important for both the Lebanese and Israeli
governments to accept and begin to implement the resolution;
- The resolution should be implemented as soon as possible;
and
- All interested parties need to actively support
implementation of the resolution.
2. (C) POLCOUNS separately passed points and draft texts to
the office of Prime Minister Balkenende and to the MFA"s
North America desk.
