STOCKS OF SMALLPOX VIRUS
REF: A) THE HAGUE 1058; B) STATE 71596
1. In response to reftel B demarche, Ministry of Health
Coordinator for Global Public Health, Lejo van der Heiden,
told Global Issues Chief May 16 that the Dutch government
would not support setting a date for destruction of the
smallpox virus held in official repositories at the upcoming
World Health Assembly meeting. He said that the possibility
that the virus still exists outside the two WHO repositories
was virtually a "public secret;" consequently, the GONL does
not believe a definite date for destruction should be set at
this time. He added, however, that the ultimate goal should
be the total destruction of remaining stocks, and that the
time for fulfilling that goal should not be allowed to slip
too far "over the horizon."
