(S) On December 5 Poloff delivered reftel points to Marin
Mottus, MFA Director for Middle East Affairs, on the recent
demonstrations in Lebanon orchestrated by Syria and
Hizballah. As Estonia has no diplomatic presence in either
Lebanon or Syria, Mottus was grateful for the information we
provided. Estonia plans to call on the EU to take a more
active role in Lebanon at the next General Affairs and
External Relations Council (GAERC) meeting in December. As
EU member states are providing the majority of the
peacekeeping soldiers in Lebanon, Mottus said, "the EU must
step up and prevent Syria from reasserting itself in Lebanese
politics." Mottus also stressed the importance of the United
States and the EU working together to avoid sending mixed
messages to Syria and Hizballah.
