SUBJECT: MACEDONIAN GOVERNMENT WELCOMES GPOI PARTNERSHIP

(U) As requested in reftel, Chief of the Office of Defense
Cooperation has approached the Minister of Defense and the
Chief of Defense to propose Macedonia's participation in
GPOI. The GOM welcomes the USG's invitation to participate
in GPOI. MOD officials request that GPOI resources be used
to equip, educate, and train the Military Police Battalion of
the Army of the Republic of Macedonia. Following the July
parliamentary elections, a new Minister of Defense will
likely be named by the end of August. Post will reiterate
the USG's interest in Macedonia's participation in GPOI once
the new Minister is in place and anticipates continued
interest from the GOM.
