REF: STATE 130573

(SBU) On August 11, poloff delivered the diplomatic note and
reftel points, requesting support for Professor Wedgwood's
re-election to the UN Human Rights Committee, to Jang
Hyun-cheol, Deputy Director of the Human Rights and Social
Affairs Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and
Trade. Jang said that Seoul was aware of her candidacy and
appreciated the Embassy's provision of her curriculum vitae
and supporting materials. Although a final decision had not
been reached by his government, he was recommending that the
ROK vote in favor of her re-election. Jang was optimistic
that his efforts would be successful because Professor
Wedgwood was an impressive candidate.
