SUBJECT: MEDIA REACTION - HAITI

On January 9, conservative, afternoon "La Segunda" (circ. 31,834)
ran an editorial entitled, "Chilean Presence in Haiti." Quote:

"Recalling Haiti's history...prompts us to look skeptically at the
U.N.'s assigned role. Only two countries, acting jointly, can
promote a change in the Americas' poorest country's unfortunate
situation: France, because of its cultural and language ties, and
the United States, because of its economic power. It is naove to
trust the U.N. to lead the fight against the poverty and corruption
that are Haiti's major problems."
