SUBJECT: MEDIA REACTION: SECRETARY RICE VISIT
1. On February 26, conservative, independent "La Tercera" (circ.
102,000) ran an editorial entitled, "U.S. Secretary of State Visit."
Quotes:
2. "Although not officially confirmed...the U.S. secretary of
State's visit to Chile...is a clear sign of good Chile-U.S.
relations.... The secretary's visit...occurs amid a growing
regional anti-American sentiment inflamed by political leaders who
use it to their advantage. It is also tied...to a left turn in a
large number of countries.
3. "There is in fact such a turn. But there is a populist
left...and there is the left represented by the Concertacion (in
Chile) and the Brazilian president, which is more modern...and has
come to terms with the free market.... The secretary's visit
could...be interpreted as a gesture acknowledging Chile's embrace of
the free market model.... The secretary's participation in the
inauguration of a female president also seems to respond to a
deliberate White House policy.... Just a few weeks ago, the U.S.
first lady attended the president of Liberia's inauguration."
