1. (C) Ministry of Defense civilian advisor Claudio Ortiz
told Poloff October 26 that the European Union was "pressing"
Chile to contribute peacekeeping troops to UNIFIL. Ortiz
noted the Belgian Minister of Defense would be in Santiago
the week of October 30 to discuss bilateral military
cooperation, and to urge Chile to contribute to UNIFIL.
Ortiz said although the MOD had done contingency planning for
such a deployment, to his knowledge the GOC was not prepared
to contribute forces to UNIFIL at this time. Post plans to
follow-up after the Chilean MOD-Belgian MOD meetings.
