SUBJECT: URGENT DEMARCHE ON LEBANON SECURITY COUNCIL
RESOLUTION (EL SALVADOR)

REF: SECSTATE 128442

On August 7, Poloff spoke with Mario Rivera, Director of
Multilateral Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He
indicated that he would share our position with General
Director of Foreign Politics Ambassador Guillermo Melendez
Barahona and Vice Foreign Minister Eduardo Calix. Rivera
lamented the fact that Israel had announced a possible 30
additional days of ground operations. Rivera further added
that he was monitoring the progress of the UN Security
Council Resolution on Lebanon in the international media and
indicated that the GOES was formulating a position on the
subject. (Note: In 2005, El Salvador supported both the
inclusion of Magen David Adom in the International Red Cross
Movement and the Committee of the Inalienable Rights of the
Palestinian People and the Division for the Palestinian
Rights of the Secretariat. They are also a strong supporter
of International Peace Keeping Forces. End Note.)
