SUBJECT: AMBASSADOR MEETS WITH NEW MINISTER OF AGRICULTURE


1. On February 26, Ambassador and USAID Director met with
the newly appointed Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation,
Jalal Ibrahim Fukairah. Ambassador and Minister Fukairah
discussed ROYG-USG cooperation on encouraging growth and
development in the agricultural sector. Fukairah hoped that
USG assistance for the agricultural sector could be expanded.
Fukairah welcomed USAID support for improving monitoring and
control measures to combat the spread of Avian Flu into
Yemen. He stated that prevention and control of Avian Flu
would be his top priority because of the potential danger to
public health and the possible economic damage an outbreak
would cause.
