SUBJECT: DEMARCHE DELIVERED: JUNE 19-21 OIC MINISTERIAL IN
BAKU
REF: STATE 96389
Classified By: POL/ECON CHIEF JOEY HOOD, FOR REASONS 1.4 (B) AND (D).
(C) PolChief delivered reftel points to Assistant Deputy
Minister of Foreign Affairs Khaled al-Akwa on June 14,
stressing the importance of not allowing the upcoming
Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) meeting to issue
unhelpful statements on Iran as happened during the last
Non-Aligned Movement meeting. Al-Akwa stated that the Yemeni
Government has been helpful in privately urging Iran to
positively consider the USG's and EU-3's proposals. "We are
threatened by a nuclear Iran as much if not more than you
are," he said. The Yemeni Government would continue to push
Iran "to resolve the problem peacefully," but would not do so
through public statements, Akwa added. He promised to pass
PolChief's points on Iran to the FM for further
consideration.
