Date: June 20, 2006 (Note: This is the date on the letter.
It is probably, however, a typographical error. June 29,
2006, was the date the letter was hand-delivered to the
Ambassador. End Note.)
To The Secretary of State
Through the US Ambassador in Morocco
Subject: Protest
Greetings,
These days the Israeli army is carrying out a violent raid
against the Gaza strip resulting in the killing of innocents
and the destruction of Palestinian infrastructure and
installations. Many Palestinians have been detained to be
added to those thousands already put in prison. All these
will add to the ongoing suffering of the Palestinians
especially women and children.
The United States of America is assuming a great part of the
responsibility in all of this because of its direct support
of Israeli policy. This support is in contradiction to all
international conventions.
On this occasion, the Justice and Development Party is asking
the American administration to give up its double standard
policy and press Israel to stop its aggression against the
Palestinians and also to put an end to the occupation of its
territories. The United States should also press the
Israelis to accept an independent Palestinian state and Al
Quds as its capital.
Saad Eddine El Othmani
Secretary General of the PJD

2. (SBU) On June 30, Arabic language newspapers, e.g.,
Tajdid and Al Alam, included statements against Israeli
actions in Gaza. All of the statements focused on Muslims
supporting the Palestinians and questioned why Arabs are
ignoring the situation. Al Alam reported that the PJD called
for a parliamentary debate on the situation and that Istiqlal
parliamentarians discussed mobilizing Moroccans to support
Palestinians.
3. (C) Comment: Discussion of the GOI's actions in Gaza
began to intensify two to three days after the event. The
PJD took advantage of a discussion on the 2007 elections
(septel) to inform the Department of its condemnation of the
events. Calls for supporting Palestinians are not new in
Morocco and the PJD's stance is not unexpected. End Comment.
