1. (C) Poloff contacted MFA Acting Director of United Nations
and International Organizations Sidi Abdelfattah El Kadiri on
May 31 to convey reftel USG opposition to Iran's candidacy
for the Chairmanship of the Executive Committee of the
International Organization for Migration (IOM). Poloff also
urged that Morocco consider seeking the position. El Kadiri
explained that the GOM was currently holding a four-day
course on international migration law in conjunction with the
IOM at Al Akhawayne University (in Ifrane two hours outside
of Rabat). Unfortunately, all of the MFA experts on the
subject are currently participating in this conference and
therefore he could not provide a substantive response. El
Kadiri pledged, however, to convey the message to the
appropriate interlocuters and reply as soon as possible.
