SUBJECT: HAITI ELECTIONS: UN SAYS HNP DID GREAT
According to Special Representative of the Secretary General
Juan Gabriel Valdes and UNPol Commissioner Graham Muir,
Minustah was completely satisfied with the performance of the
Haitian National Police on election day, both from security
and human rights perspectives. Valdes said at a Core Group
meeting on February 7 that the HNP accepted the Minustah
elections security plan and cooperated fully with election
day security efforts. He also said that human rights
observers who circulated on February 7 were equally
impressed. Embassy observers deployed in Port-au-Prince
reported seeing HNP officers actively engaged in crowd
control efforts at polling stations, as well as helping
voters find their polling places.
