SUBJECT: ADVANCE OF INT'L MARITIME ORGANIZATION'S MARITIME
SAFETY COMM MEETING STARTING 29 NOVEMBER

REF: STATE 183434

Per reftel, post delivered talking points to the Ministry of
Foreign Affairs. Government of Suriname (GOS) acknowledged
receipt of information. Maritime Authority spokesman Robert
Chin, who is advising GOS Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said
that GOS does support the USG's proposals, the Long Range
Identification and Tracking (LRIT) system and augmentation of
the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS),but
is unable to send a representative to the Maritime Safety
Committee in Istanbul. Mr. Chin said he is preparing a
letter that he will send to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
to support the vote, which should be expedited to the
International Maritime Organization,s Maritime Safety
Committee.

Post will inform the Department of any other response from
GOS.
