1. (U) On June 7, a special envoy from the Government of
Indonesia, Ambassador Ambassador Soemadi D.M.
Brotodininggrat, met with President Venetiaan, according to
the evening newspaper "De West." Ambassador
Brotodininggrat reportedly discussed Indonesia's candidacy
for a non-permanent seat on the U.N. Security Council for
2007-2008 with the President.

2. (SBU) Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim
nation, is hoping to receive support from Suriname, which
has a population consisting of 13.5 percent Muslims, and
historic ties based in late nineteenth century Indonesian
emigration to Suriname. An official from the Ministry of
Foreign Affairs told the Embassy that Suriname does not
have an official position on the 2007-2008 voting yet, but
will most likely join the Caricom consensus.
