TAGS: PREL PGOV VE EAID NO KDEM
SUBJECT: DEMARCHE DELIVERED ON VENEZUELA'S ANTI-NGO LAW
REF: STATE 97547
Classified By: Pol/Econ Counselor Mike Hammer, Reasons 1.4 (b) and (d)
(C) On June 15 we delivered reftel points to Herberth Linder,
Office Director in the MFA's Latin American Affairs Section.
He revealed that Norway already joined a demarche with the
EU, Canada and Switzerland, which was delivered to the
Chairman of the National Assembly. The demarche expressed
concerns regarding the Law of International Cooperation.
Linder believes that the legislation is "not good" with
respect to its likely affect on humanitarian groups in
Venezuela, particularly given that Norway strongly supports a
number of NGOs in that country.
