1. (C) On June 2, following Ambassador Schlicher's
interventions with President Papadopoulos and Presidential
Diplomatic Advisor Tasos Tzionis (ref b),the Cypriot MFA
released a statement of support for our May 31 announcement
on Iran.

2. (U) Begin text of the MFA Statement:

The Cypriot government is pleased with the decision of the
United States, as was announced on May 31, 2006 by the
American Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice, to participate
in the negotiations with Iran regarding Tehran,s nuclear
program. Simultaneously, the government welcomes yesterday's
agreement between France, Germany, the UK, Russia, China and
the United States as regards the submission of proposals to
Iran. The Cypriot government consistently supports the
pursuit of a peaceful solution to the issue of the Iranian
nuclear program through the diplomatic route and hopes that
every strong effort will be made to avoid a crisis that will
have unforeseeable and catastrophic consequences for regional
peace and stability and the global economy.
