1. (SBU) U.S., U.K., United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime
experts, together with Kenyan law enforcement authorities and
chemists, began the physical verification of the 955 packets
(twenty-two foot lockers) of cocaine on March 28. The
international team estimates that it will take several days
to physically verify, weigh, sample, and perform as many as
four different tests on all or samples of the 1 ton-plus
seizure. The four parties' intent remains to comply with
Magistrate Muchelule's instructions that the entire seizure
(except perhaps for the 42 packets that are official exhibits
in the ongoing trial of the six individuals charged in
connection to the seizure) be incinerated at 11 a.m. on
Friday, March 31.
2. (SBU) Post expects high-level GOK officials and several
foreign dignitaries to participate in the public ceremony to
kick off the destruction of the historical cocaine haul. The
incineration may take up to eight hours given the magnitude
of the seizure. International experts intend to refrain from
providing partial results or to comment upon the exercise,
other then to confirm that the process is ongoing.
