1. (SBU) Poloff delivered reftel demarche to Norma Diaz,
Director for International Organizations at Mexico's Foreign
Relations Secretariat's (SRE) Office of United Nations
Affairs. Diaz explained that the GOM has no official
position on Iran's candidacy for Chairman of the
International Organization for Migration's (IOM) next
Executive Committee meeting. According to Diaz, the issue
has not been raised within the SRE. Diaz said her office has
been instructed to support GRULAC candidate Chile for the
position. She added that Mexico had no intention to seek its
own candidacy at this time. Poloff emphasized that Iran's
candidacy would not be in the interest of the organization
and would reflect poorly on Member States. Diaz agreed, but
reiterated that Mexico would be supporting Chile's candidacy
and not Iran's. Diaz said she would gladly inform Poloff of
any changes. We will report any further updates as they
occur.
