.
1. (C) In the absence of the Foreign Minister, Pol/Econ
Chief November 14 delivered reftel demarches concerning
country specific human rights resolutions at the UNGA Third
Committee to MFA Director for International Organization
Affairs Ghassan Shaikho. Regarding Ref B demarche requesting
Bahraini support for resolutions on Iran, Belarus,
Uzbekistan, Burma, and North Korea, Shaikho said Bahrain
would have no trouble supporting them with the exception of
the Iran resolution. He did not rule out Bahrain voting in
favor of the Iran resolution, but said that with Iran,
Bahrain must be practical because "we have to live next door
to them." He agreed, however, with the substantive points on
the human rights situation in Iran. He pledged that Bahrain
would do its best to oppose or abstain on any "No-Action"
motions.
2. (C) On the retaliatory resolutions targeting the United
States and Canada (Ref A),Shaikho said these were
unwarranted. He will request input from the Bahraini mission
to the UN and said that Bahrain wants to support its "friend
and ally" the United States.
