.

(C) During an October 18 meeting between the interagency U.S.
Gulf Security Dialogue delegation and Crown Prince Shaikh
Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa (septel),Assistant Secretary of
Defense for International Security Affairs Peter Rodman asked
the CP for Bahrain's position on the UN Security Council
GRULAC seat. Shaikh Salman said that Bahrain was voting for
Guatemala. MFA Assistant Under Secretary for Coordination
and Follow Up Shaikh Abdul Aziz bin Mubarak Al Khalifa added
that Bahrain supports Guatemala for the position because
Venezuela had already served on the UNSC four times and, he
commented, Bahrain considered Venezuelan President Chavez's
speech to the UNGA to be inappropriate. The Ambassador also
noted that if Venezuela held the GRULAC seat, it would
complicate UNSC action on Iran's nuclear program.
