(C) The Charge August 12 delivered reftel demarche concerning
the UN Security Council resolution on Lebanon to MFA
Assistant Under Secretary for Coordination and Follow Up
Shaikh Abdul Aziz bin Mubarak Al Khalifa, emphasizing that
Arab support for the resolution was important. Shaikh Abdul
Aziz replied that the resolution was much-needed and
well-balanced. It represents a good start. He said
implementation should come sooner rather than later because
everyone wants the suffering to stop immediately. Issues
such as secure borders could wait to be implemented; the
focus must now be on stopping the conflict. A strong
Lebanese government and armed forces would facilitate a
durable ceasefire.
