(C) Ambassador spoke with Nicaraguan Vice Foreign Minister
Javier Williams Slate on June 2 regarding reftel. Williams
Slate explained to Ambassador that the Nicaraguan government
(GON) had reserved its vote on the Iran document and that it
did not support its text. Later in the day, Ambassador
raised the matter with President Bolanos and Foreign Minister
Norman Caldera. Caldera elaborated on Nicaragua's position,
noting the GON had reserved its vote with the argument that
the NAM in not an appropriate forum to address the Iran
issue.
