Contrary to the USG position, the Head of Vessels at the
Portuguese Institute of Ports and Shipping Jose Manuel Maciel
Andrade told post that Portugal will follow the European
Commission's position of having a separate international
organization, the International Mobile Satellite Organization
(IMSO),take the administrative role in both Long Range
Identification and Tracking (LRIT) and in Global Maritime
Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) augmentation instead of
the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Maciel Andrade
will head Portugal's delegation at the IMO's Maritime Safety
Committee (MSC) meeting in Istanbul, Turkey.
