1. (C) The Ambassador discussed reftel talking points late
on May 31 in separate conversations with Prime Minister
Socrates and Foreign Minister Freitas do Amaral. The Prime
Minister expressed his government's full support for the U.S.
decision and pledged to help in any way he could. The
Foreign Minister welcomed the U.S. announcement, saying he
agreed completely with the U.S. approach and had long
supported U.S. involvement. He promised to issue a statement
of support that evening or, at the latest, the morning of
June 1.
2. (U) Comment: We will send the text of the GOP statement
as soon as it is available.
