SUBJECT: LLORENTI WON'T BE BOLIVIA'S AMBASSADOR TO THE U.S.

Late on May 9, Sacha Llorenti announced that he has declined
to serve as Bolivia's Ambassador to the United States. While
rumors had been circulating regarding Llorenti's possible
resignation for several weeks due to personal reasons
(possibly due to his mother's ill health),no formal
announcement had been made, and the Bolivian Senate had not
yet confirmed him as ambassador. The GOB criticized
Llorenti's resignation; Vice-President Alvaro Garcia Linera
stated he regrets the time lost that could have been used to
further relations with the "most important embassy for
Bolivia." Our MFA contacts tell us that the GOB will move
quickly to name a replacement.
