-- Islamist MP Khdhair Al-Enezi penned in progressive Arabic daily
Al-Qabas under the title "Bitter Reality" (10/29):

"None of the Americans' promises in Iraq have materialized. They
promised us democracy and humanitarian society after the ouster of
dictatorship. So far we have only the dictatorship of parties and
sects that will apparently end up dividing this Arab country
according to ethnic origins and sect. The Mecca Convention will not
end the bloodbath as there are those who fuel grudges in Iraq and
those who settle accounts in lands that are not theirs."

-- Salafi Dr. Fahd Al-Khanna commented in moderate Arabic daily
Al-Watan under the title "Terrorism Prevailed" (10/29):

"The second victory by terror against America and the West is the
growth of discord and enmity between the East and West. These are
fuelled by Bush's statements on Islamic Fascism and comments by the
Vatican on Islam and the Prophet Mohammed."

-- Liberal columnist Sami Al-Nisif editorialized in moderate Arabic
daily Al-Anbaa under the title "With Iran and Against Its Policies"
(10/29):

"Any military strike by coalition warplanes to weaken Iran's
military capability may lead to splitting the Iranian subcontinent,
which is made up of ethnic and sectarian minorities who have
suffered persecution under the Shah's rule and who suffer from the
Iranian governments' involvement in successive crises and wars. He
who does not learn from the mistakes of others will certainly learn
from his own."
