1. (S) We delivered reftel A demarche, concerning the
Malaysian Army's attempts to purchase surveillance equipment
from Iran, to Bala Chandran Tharman, Principal Assistant
Secretary, Multilateral Political Division on November 3. We

asked for the Malaysian Government to provide us with any
information about this procurement. We took the opportunity
to reiterate our request for information concerning the
purchase by a Malaysian company of other defensive equipment
from Iran (reftels B and C).
2. (S) The Foreign Ministry official was not familiar with
the army's proposed procurement and indicated they would look
into the matter as well as follow up on our earlier request.
Bala Chandran stated that Malaysia was cognizant of the
atmosphere in the United Nations regarding Iran and issues of
non-proliferation. Post will follow up accordingly.
