1. (U) DRC Independent Electoral Commission (CEI) President
Apollinaire Malu Malu said in a November 2 press conference
that results from more than 9,000 of the DRC's 50,045 polling
stations have been compiled. Although this represents 18
percent of all stations, the CEI has not yet released any
vote counts. Malu Malu said the CEI still plans to announce
provisional nationwide presidential results no later than
November 19.
2. (U) The re-vote in the distant Ituri District town of
Fataki (reftel) passed without incident November 2. CEI
officials said approximately 22,000 voters would have been
eligible to take part in the re-vote. Officials estimated
turnout was lower than the original October 29 vote.
3. (U) CEI officials in Kinshasa said November 2 ballot
collection from the capital's 8,500 polling stations has been
completed. Voting documents are now being transported to
compilation centers where results will be verified before
being announced.
