1. (U) MONUC Director of Information Kemal Saiki confirmed to
PAO that eight Guatemalan peacekeepers were killed on January
23 in an operation against Lord's Resistance Army forces in
Garamba National Park near the Sudanese border. An
additional fourteen peacekeepers were injured, and have been
taken by helicopter to Bunia. Saiki reported that the
casualties occurred during a fire fight lasting several
hours. Nepalese peacekeepers have been deployed to cordon
off the area, according to Saiki.
