1. (C) UK Ambassador to Sudan Ian Cliff, at his request,
received CDA Hume September 6. Cliff informed Hume that the
UK Ministry of Foreign Affairs intends to appoint William
Patey, former British Ambassador to Sudan, as its next
Special Representative for Darfur. Patey will travel to
Addis Ababa to encourage the African Union Peace and Security
Council to extend the mandate of the AU Mission in Sudan
beyond September 30.
2. (C) Ambassador Cliff also reported on his meeting with
Presidential Advisor Magzoub al-Khalifa on September 5.
Khalifa assured Cliff there would be no break in Sudan-UK
relations over Darfur owing to their historic relationship.
Cliff took this as a definitive answer from the Government of
Sudan that he would not be declared persona non grata.
