(C) On August 7 the Ambassador delivered reftel talking
points about the UN Security Council draft resolution on
Lebanon to Officiating Foreign Secretary Bhagirath Basnet.
The Ambassador stressed that the two-phased approach embodied
in the draft resolution represented the international
community's best hope of finding a lasting solution on
Lebanon. Basnet said the Government of Nepal (GON) wanted
peace in Lebanon. He noted that approximately 4,000 Nepalis
had returned to Nepal since the fighting broke out and that
others remained in Lebanon. Basnet agreed to convey our
points to the Nepali Permanent Mission in New York
immediately.
