Murrow Program for Journalists START MEMO PROJ-DESC: END MEMO PROJ-DESC: PROJ-TYPE: Multi-Regional PROG-TYPE: IV Grant Visitor FY: 2007 DEPART-POST: 04/16/2007 SESSION-DATE: 04/16/2007 RETURN-POST: 05/04/2007 NO-OF-PART: 2 RANK-ORDER: 0 START MEMO POST-OBJ: To provide a young Guyanese journalist who has the potential to become a leader in the profession with exposure to the journalistic skills and contacts. Guyanese journalists have limited formal training opportunities locally and most have to learn their skills on the job. Guyana suffers from a high migration rate and as such there are seldom veteran journalists within media organizations who can properly train, guide and tutor young journalists. Post feels that this program would provide an excellent opportunity for a local journalist to become a more effective reporter and analyst of important issues in Guyana. END MEMO POST-OBJ: START MEMO POST-RCMD: Ms. Iana Seales is a young journalist with three years experience working for the independent Stabroek News. She initially covered the court system and legal stories, but has since expanded her beat to include education, culture, health, crime and human rights issues. Her May 2006 article "Rape and Healing, Three Survivors Remember" led to her appearance as a Panelist on the Guyana Human Rights Association's (GHRA) Symposium on "A way forward for Rape victims". She has won first prize in the Pan-American Health Organization Health Award category for 2005 with an article titled, "No evidence of widespread Leptospirosis" and Second Prize for Best Feature Story category in 2005 for "Abortions still not being offered at public hospitals". Post believes that participation in the Edward Murrow Journalism program will allow Ms. Seales to be better understand how the U.S. media operate and will be a motivational experience for this ambitious young reporter. Post nominates Mr. Duane Fowler as an alternate. Mr. Fowler has 7 years experience in journalism and covers foreign affairs, business, trade, political issues and tourism. One of his recent articles explored the nexus between trafficking-in-persons (TIP) and the spread of HIV/AIDS in Guyana -- "GHRA concerned that TIP-related HIV/AIDS could 'wipe out' Amerindian villages". Mr. Fowler was the first journalist to provide local coverage of the events of September 11, 2001.
