SUBJECT: IRELAND SUPPORTS UNSC RESOLUTION 1673

(SBU) On June 12, emboff delivered reftel points and
non-paper text to Department of Foreign Affairs Disarmament &
Non-Proliferation Director Adrian McDaid and Desk Officer
Michael Keaveney. Keaveney stated that the GOI continues to
view the implementation of UNSCR 1540 as an integral part of
maintaining international security and preventing the
proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and welcomes the
extension mandated by UNSCR 1673. Keaveney noted that the
GOI is involved in an EU joint action program in which
regional seminars will be held to assist other countries file
national reports to meet their obligations to UNSCR 1540. He
said that the program would also help countries respond to
additional information requests made by the 1540 Committee.
Keaveney expects the program to be approved at the European
Council meeting on June 15-16 in Brussels.
