1. (C) Tanzania supports the resolution on Iran (reftel)
and has sent instructions to support it as is, Ambassador
Liberata Mulamula, Director of the Ministry of Foreign
Affairs' (MFA) Multilateral Division, told DCM the morning of
July 31. Mulamula said that Iran had requested that any
Security Council action be delayed to August 22, but the
resolution provides time for Iran to respond to the P5 1
proposal and, if Iran is committed to resolve the situation,
it should be able to deliver a response by August 31.
Mulamula said there is still room for diplomatic efforts and
hopes Iran will consider the P5 1 proposal favorably.

2. (C) In a subsequent meeting, Vitus Njiku, head of the
MFA's Security Council Unit, said there had been some
confusion regarding the possibility of a Presidential
Statement in lieu of a resolution. Poloff clarified that the
resolution was the only text being considered. Poloff's
subsequent telephone conversation with the UK's Deputy High
Commissioner revealed that the possibility of the resolution
being adopted as a Presidential Text had been discussed over
the weekend and that this may have been miscommunicated as a
Presidential Statement by Tanzanian representatives in New
York to the capital.
