Classified By: CDA Michael A. Matera for Reasons 1.4(b) and (d).
(C) PolCouns delivered reftel points to Ambassador Fernandez
Salorio of the Argentine MFA Office of International
Organizations on October 19. Salorio conceded that Venezuela
would never obtain the required votes to obtain the Council
seat but said that Mercosur and Argentina were committed to
supporting Venezuela as long as it remained in the race. He
opined that a compromise candidate would eventually come
forward through GRULAC but stressed that the GoA would not
take any action on it own to encourage either of the current
candidates to withdraw.
