1. (C) Argentine Deputy Foreign Minister Roberto Garcia
Moritan phoned the Ambassador on January 18 to follow up on
the Ambassador's January 12 demarche on reporting Iran to the
Security Council (Reftel B). Garcia Moritan told the
Ambassador the GOA would support both the call for an
emergency IAEA Board of Governors meeting and the subsequent
referral of Iran to the UNSC. Garcia Moritan said the GOA's
position had not changed from the September 2005 BOG meeting
during which it was committed to support the EU-3 position.
2. (U) Meanwhile, the Argentine Foreign Ministry issued a
communique on January 17 on the Iranian issue reaffirming the
GOA's "firm defense of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes"
while at the same time "emphasizing that (the GOA) supported
the work of the IAEA in relation to the application of
safeguards in the Islamic Republic of Iran and of conformance
with the Non-Proliferation Treaty . . . and, in particular,
of the diplomatic efforts undertaken by Germany, France, the
United Kingdom and the European Union.
