1. (SBU) PolCouns delivered reftel demarche on May 11 to
Minister Jorge Gomez and Minister Maria Raballo of the Office
of International Organizations of the Argentine Foreign
Ministry. PolCouns reviewed points in reftel with Gomez and
Raballo and underscored the importance we place on GoA
support of the resolution. Talking points were left as
non-paper.

2. (C) Gomez said the GoA fully supported the objectives
set forth in resolution 1559. However, he noted that
"concern" had been expressed by some Council members over a
possible "rewriting" of 1559. He said these concerns had
been raised last week when discussions over a possible UNSC
presidential statement reconfirming 1559 bogged down. Gomez
said the GoA was looking for a consensus position on 1559.
He said the GoA would prefer this consensus to be in the form
of a statement rather than a new resolution.

3. (C) Comment: The emphasis on "consensus" has become the
standard MFA reply on any UNSC issue dealing with the Middle
East. The GoA will not stand in the way of a new Lebanon
resolution, but at the same time, neither will they be out
front in promoting one. End Comment.
