1. (C) The Belgian government generally shares USG goals at
the upcoming UN Human Rights Council session, according to
France Chainay, Director for Human Rights matters in the
MFA's International Organizations Division. She told
polcouns the Belgians were particularly anxious to avoid
having one subject like the Middle East conflict "hijack" the
entire session. Chainay said she looked forward to working
with DHL A/S Lowenkron and DAS Barks-Ruggles, whom she knew
during her just concluded service in Washington.
2. (C) Without commenting on the U.S. interest in Burma and
North Korea, Chainay indicated that Belarus remained an area
of special concern to Belgium, which served as OSCE Chairman
in Office. She was eager to exchange views on this issue.
