1. On August 29, 2006, Embassy received from the Brazilian Ministry
of Foreign Affairs, Division of Science and Technology, (DCTEC/MFA)
an official notification (number 049, dated August 29, 2006)
approving the research project proposal entitled "Assessment of
Safety and Toxicity Among Infants Born to HIV-1 Infected Women,"
(contract number HD33345-13, protocol PACTG 1054-ACTG 5190),under
the direction of Dr. Esau Custodio Joao. Informal translation of
the approval notice follows:

"Dear Counselor,

I hereby inform you that after consultation with relevant federal
agencies, the project "Assessment of Safety and Toxicity Among
Infants Born to HIV-1 Infected Women", to be developed by Dr. Esau
Custodio Joao Filho, of Hospital dos Servidores do Estado, Rio de
Janeiro (RJ),with the financial support of "National Institutes of
Health" (NIH),was approved by the Brazilian government.

2) I emphasize that for the collection and transfer of data and/or
biological material abroad, procedures should conform to current
legislation.
